Reflections Series, 2018-2022, ongoing

THE REFLECTIONS SERIES, the slightly later-born twin of the Colorwash Series, began before it began as I took breaks at the studio, walking my two miniature dachshunds around the block. I walked with my eyes on the sidewalk, anticipating canine mischief, but also enthralled by the changing play of shadows from the fences and plants, and by reflections from the curved glass of windshields, and curved metal car bumpers along the way.

Later on, as I was deep into working on the Colorwash series, I began playing with holographic craft material, bending it, to reflect light and color, or using my hand to form changing shadow shapes.  The setups, in their shimmering hot colors read like abstracted landscapes, albeit occasionally science-fictional, and reminiscent, too, of more earthly remembered or imagined vistas.  I was amazed at how little essential gesture or shape was required to evoke mountains, sea, sky, the view from an airplane window.  The color worked in ways that were decidedly paint-like—it could be mixed, for one thing, by bouncing colors together — and surprisingly similar to what I was already doing with the Colorwash works.  Here too, I was making carefully-improvised temporary setups and documenting them with a large format view camera, usually before the elements could topple the work.  With the Reflections series, I could also disassemble the pieces and make new ones again and and again from the same materials, allowing me to explore not only abstraction but also iteration. I have worked both series in tandem since the inception.
